“I look for a player who’s tougher. I look for a player who seems passionate about the game. I think all of us are looking for guys that we know what they need to improve, so if you have toughness and you have some passion you’ll probably improve.”
– Tom Izzo, Head Coach Michigan State Mens’ Basketball
Skills College Coaches look for in a Student Athlete
- Skill
The game is changing and the value to be able to shoot, dribble, and pass is bigger than ever. As position-less basketball becomes the way most college teams are looking to play, it is harder than ever to get recruited if you have deficiencies in your skill. - Motor
When two players are equal in ability level, the next thing a college coach is looking for when recruiting a player is his or her motor. This is something that you have control over, and regardless of how well you are playing, your motor should be a non-negotiable attribute. - Basketball IQ
Often the better coached players in grade school and high school have an advantage in this area. Understanding HOW to play the game is as important as being able to make the plays when they are there. Study the game as much as possible and be a student of the game. You can learn a lot by watching how good players play the game. - Defense
This is a twofold skill. First, you have to play with effort and have pride on the defensive end of the floor. Secondly, you have know where to be and why you are there. In many ways this is a combination of motor and basketball IQ and the result could be the difference if you get a scholarship or not. - Winning
Ability to effect winning is 100 percent a skill. Players that come from winning programs understand the standard that needs set and the day to day approach to winning. Whether you score 50 points or 5, your ability to HELP YOUR TEAM WIN, will be highly valued by coaches at the next level.
